GOLA HELMET MASK . Early 19th century,  15''
                     Liberia
This extraordinary helmet mask with its complex symbolism and well-executed carving
is unique in its style and imagery reflecting the skills of a talented and skillful sculptor
from among the Gola of Liberia and Sierra Leone. This mask is best described as a
semi-helmet mask in that it will fit over the head but is more akin to a face mask than
a full casque or helmet style mask. Beautifully carved in a unique style this mask is in
excellent condition with obvious signs of long use and care of preservation. Very
strong mask.  Wood
